Today, May 10, 2026, we at American Legion Post 38 in Floresville, Texas, celebrate Mother's Day with extra gratitude and deep respect for the remarkable women who serve as military mothers and spouses in our community and across the nation.
Military life places extraordinary demands on families, and no one feels those demands more deeply than the moms and spouses who hold everything together on the home front. Deployments that last months or even years, sudden moves across the country or around the world, missed birthdays, school events, and holidays — these women navigate it all while maintaining strength, stability, and love for their children and their service member. They face the emotional weight of uncertainty, the stress of single-parenting during absences, and the quiet courage it takes to send a loved one off to serve while keeping a smile for the kids.
Here in Wilson County, many of our Post 38 families have lived this reality. Whether it was a husband or wife deployed to Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, or serving in peacetime operations, these military moms have been the backbone of their households. They have raised children who grew up to be service members themselves, creating multi-generational legacies of duty and honor. They have volunteered in schools, churches, the Auxiliary, and youth programs while managing the unique challenges that come with military life — all while supporting the mission of those who wear the uniform.
Post 38 is proud to stand with these families. Our monthly Third-Thursday Veteran Tailgates are intentionally family-friendly, offering a relaxed place where military moms, spouses, and their children can connect with others who truly understand the journey. Through scholarships and ROTC support at local high schools, we invest directly in the next generation the very children these military moms have raised with such dedication.
The American Legion has recognized the vital role of military families since our founding in 1919. Our Auxiliary has long provided support networks, scholarships, and community programs specifically for the spouses and children of veterans. At Post 38, we carry that tradition forward every day through direct assistance and simply by being a welcoming place where military moms know they are seen, valued, and never alone.
On this Mother's Day, we want every military mom and spouse in Floresville and Wilson County to feel the full weight of our appreciation. Your service may not come with medals or parades, but it is every bit as essential to our nation's strength. You are the quiet heroes who keep the home fires burning, who teach your children the values of duty, honor, and country, and who stand ready to welcome your service member home — no matter how long they've been away.

Every year on the third Saturday of May, Americans pause to honor the men and women who serve in every branch of the United States Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day on May 16, 2026, is more than a date on the calendar — it is a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and national pride that traces its roots back more than 75 years.
Before 1949, the United States did not have a single day dedicated to all service members. Instead, each branch celebrated its own special day. The Army observed Army Day on April 6, the Navy held Navy Day on October 27, the Air Force (then part of the Army) had its own observances, and the Marine Corps and Coast Guard marked their founding anniversaries with separate ceremonies.
These individual celebrations were meaningful, but in the years following World War II, military leaders and government officials recognized that a divided approach no longer reflected the modern, integrated fighting force that had defeated the Axis powers.
In 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis A. Johnson took decisive action. With the full support of President Harry S. Truman, he announced the creation of Armed Forces Day — a single, unified holiday designed to honor every branch of the military under one banner. The first official Armed Forces Day was observed on May 20, 1950. President Truman issued a proclamation declaring that the day would "increase public understanding of the Armed Forces" and strengthen the bond between the military and the American people.
The timing was deliberate. By placing Armed Forces Day in mid-May just one week before Memorial Day the nation created a meaningful sequence of remembrance: first honoring those currently serving, then remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This thoughtful placement has endured for more than seven decades.
Over the years, Armed Forces Day has evolved while staying true to its original purpose. During the Korean War and Vietnam era, it became a time for communities across America to show support for troops serving far from home. In the 1980s and 1990s, as the all-volunteer force matured, the day highlighted the professionalism and dedication of career service members. Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Armed Forces Day took on renewed significance as millions of Americans expressed gratitude to the men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Today, Armed Forces Day continues to shine a light on the six branches that protect our nation: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Each branch brings unique capabilities — from ground combat and naval power projection to air superiority, expeditionary warfare, maritime safety, and space operations — yet all operate as one team under the Department of Defense.
Here at American Legion Post 38 in Floresville, Texas, we have always understood the importance of this unity. Our members have served in every branch and every conflict since World War I. For years, the Post has marked individual branch birthdays with cake, stories, and fellowship, celebrating the distinctive heritage of each service while recognizing that together they form an unbreakable shield for our freedoms. The trumpet sound and echo loud,
Remember me as I sleep,
Say a prayer for me for I cannot,
I gave my last breathe for thee,

All gave some; but some gave all. Today we remember those that gave all. Remember these brave warriors of America had dreams and aspirations. When the dark cloud form in the distance, they heard the call to arms. They felt trepidation yet without hesitation they ran to the sounds of the guns. They set aside their dreams and aspirations. To defended our country, our people, our custom and our traditions. To defended our future. They sacrifice all to hold the line.
Their families and friends mourn the loss and carrying their memories for all their lives. To many of us, their names are forever unknown. These brave warriors of America gave their last full measure during peace and war for an ideal greater than themselves. They gave their lives for America. A nation with a covenant with the Almighty. What is our gratitude for this so great a sacrifice? How do we honor them? Lt. Gen. Chesty Puller said, "Valour is not found in the heart or hand of a man, but in the eyes of his comrades well served." Many of America's warrior had continued to serve long after leaving military service. Now sleep eternally. These American warriors served us well.
Our national gratitude is to honor them by remembering them. On Memorial Day let us pray in thanksgiving to their courage, fidelity and valour. Today, briefly, we share in the loss with their families and friends. General George Patton said it best, "We should thank God such men lived".

Commander Jared Shaw Presents Awards at TX-20012 Annual Ceremony
American Legion Post 38, a 501(c)(19) nonprofit organization dedicated to U.S. military veterans in Floresville, Texas, continues its proud tradition of supporting the Floresville High School Air Force JROTC program. We have a long-standing history of backing local high school JROTC endeavors and remain committed to developing the next generation of leaders and patriots.
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Post 38 was invited to the TX-20012 annual awards ceremony. Commander Jared Shaw represented the Post and proudly presented two awards to outstanding cadets.
Cadet Ashlynn Winn earned the American Legion Scholastic Award for her exceptional academic achievements. This prestigious award recognizes cadets who rank in the top 25% of their class, demonstrate strong leadership, and actively participate in school activities. It includes a bronze medal with a ribbon featuring a distinctive scholastic scroll miniature.
Cadet Hunter Burgess received the American Legion General Military Excellence Award, honoring his superior military performance, leadership, and dedication to the JROTC program. Both cadets were presented with signed certificates on behalf of American Legion Post 38.
The JROTC instructors, Major Araujo and SMSGT Gamboa, were also honored for their tireless efforts in preserving the rich heritage and traditions of JROTC at Floresville High School. They received newly minted American Legion Post 38 challenge coins as a token of our deep appreciation.
Post 38 is honored to stand behind these young men and women as they develop the values of service, leadership, and patriotism.
Post 38 extends its heartfelt thanks to the Floresville Independent School District (FISD) for the invitation and continued partnership. We are grateful to be a proud supporter of this outstanding program.
